This intricate quilt-like transport case was loosely based on a 1560s British design of strapwork in diamond shapes with figure-of-eight-knots and stylised flowers from the V&A collection.

The central scroll references one of the artist’s own poem, interpreting the morning bird songs as a hymn for renewal. Its inclusion on an instrument case aligns with the musical quality of poetry, classically associated with the lyre, whereas the textural copper threads emulate the sun’s warmth when caught by the light.
